The NVSL

All Stars 2011 was filled with lots exciting races and extremely fast swims, but 2 swimmers in particular stood above the crowd on Saturday, August 6 by setting new NVSL records.  Fair Oaks' Anthony Grimm established a new record in the 8 & Under Boys 25 Meter Butterfly, posting a time of 16.80, beating the previous mark of 17.10 set by Austin Patteson of Fairfax in 2002.  And in the last race of the day, Reanna Dona of host pool Waynewood set a new record in the 15-18 Girls 50 Meter Backstroke with a time of 29.18.  Reanna's time bettered the mark of 29.69 set by Mosby Woods' Janet Hu earlier this year.  Congratulations to Anthony and Reanna as well to all All Star swimmers!  And thank you Waynewood for hosting a truly memorable All Star meet!

Every year at Divisionals a Sportsmanship Award is given to one team in each of the NVSL's 17 divisions.  Each team is given three votes toward the award for their division: one vote from the Team Representative, one vote from the coaches and one from the 13 and over team members.  The Sportsmanship Award is designed to recognize the team in each division which best exemplifies the principles of good sportsmanship as embodied in the NVSL Standards of Conduct.

The following new NVSL records were set on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Divisionals:

     - Cassidy Bayer of Mount Vernon Park broke her own record of 29.76 set earlier this year in the 11-12 girls 50 meter butterfly, with a new time of 29.71.

     - Janet Hu of Mosby Woods broke the record in the 15-18 girls 50 meter butterfly with a time of 27.95.  The old record of 28.26 was set in 2010 by Elizabeth Hall of Poplar Tree.  Janet set the 15-18 girls backstroke record earlier this year and currently owns an amazing 14 NVSL individual records.

     - Andrew Seliskar of McLean broke 2 records.  He recorded times of 26.40 in the 13-14 boys 50 meter butterfly (the old record was 26.46 set by Hunter Mill's Sean Fletcher in 2006) and 1:00.29 in the 13-14 boys 100 meter IM (the old record 1:00.97 was set by Oakton's Mike Ott in 1999).  These record swims by Andrew were his 5th and 6th of the season, since he was also a member of relays which had 4 record breaking swims earlier this season.   

     - Chuck Katis of Highlands Swim broke the record in the 15-18 boys 100 meter IM with a time of 57.30, breaking the mark of 57.40 set by Sean Fletcher of Hunter Mill in 2009.

While temperatures across the NVSL on Saturday, July 23 were certainly toasty, nobody was as hot as the Chesterbrook 9-10 Boys Relay team of Nick Spicer, Jack McManus, Thomas Outlaw and Michael Bennett.  The quartet blazed to a new NVSL record time of 1:08.61 in the 100 meter medley relay during Chesterbrook's meet at Overlee, torching the previous standard of 1:09.4 set by Mansion House in 1983, which had been the longest standing Saturday meet Boys Relay meter record.  Amazing swim Nick, Jack, Thomas and Michael!    

 Coming into   the Division 1 Relay Carnival held at Chesterbrook on July 13, 2011, everyone was aware that the McLean 13-14 Boys were a formidable force, having already set an NVSL record in the 100 Meter Medley Relay this season.  Following the Relay Carnival, at which they set two additional NVSL Relay Carnival records, there was no doubt that they are a special group.  The team of Christopher Murphy, Andrew Seliskar, Justin Nguyen and Jack Saunders set a new standard in the 13-14 Boys 200 Meter Medley Relay with a time of 1:57,90, nearly three seconds faster than the previous mark of 2:00.70 set by Lee-Graham in 2010.  The same four also combined to swim a 1:46.78 in the 13-14 Boys 200 Freestyle Relay, eclipsing Lee-Graham's 2010 mark of 1:47.26.  Earlier in the meet, Andrew Seliskar teamed with Timothy Wu (age 12), Dereck Charles (10) and his brother Stephen Seliskar (17) to break the NVSL Relay Carnival record in the Boys Mixed Age 200 Meter Freestyle Relay, with a time of 1:51.04, surpassing the mark of 1:51.33 set by a previous McLean team in 2010.  Outstanding swimming McLean Boys!

After narrowly missing the NVSL record the previous week by one-hundreth of a second, on Saturday July 9, 2011 the McLean 13-14 boys 100 meter medley relay broke through the barrier, and then some, with a time of 54.85, eclipsing the old mark of 55.57 set by Cardinal Hill in 2009.  The team of Christopher Murphy, Andrew Seliskar, Justin Nguyen and Jack Saunders set the mark at McLean's pool in their meet against Hamlet.  This record can be found with the other official NVSL records by clicking on the Records tab above.  Great swim Christopher, Andrew, Justin and Jack!   

On Saturday, July 9, 2011 Mount Vernon Park's Cassidy Bayer recorded a time of 29.76 in the girls 11-12 50 meter butterfly, breaking the previous NVSL record of 30.03 set by Mosby Woods' Janet Hu in 2008.  Cassidy's remarkable swim came at Mount Vernon Park in their meet against Donaldson Run.  Cassidy's record can be viewed, along with the other League Records, by clicking on the Records tab above.   11 year old Cassidy is also the owner of the NVSL record in the 9-10 girls 25 meter butterfly, which she set in 2010.  Way to go Cassidy!   

With a time of 22.59, Hayfield Farm's Ben Lambert smashed the NVSL record in the boys 13-14 50 yard freestyle, eclipsing the previous mark of 22.90 set by Jon Ballard of Tuckahoe way back in 1979.  Ben's swim came on July 9, 2011 during Hayfield Farm's meet at Holmes Run Acres, one of the few remaining 25 yard pools in the NVSL.  Congratulations Ben on your historic swim! 

Prior to the 2011 season, Janet Hu owned 13 individual NVSL records spanning across every age group from 8 & under to 13-14.  Janet is now 15 and on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Mosby Woods she laid claim to her first NVSL record in the 15-18 age group.  She swam a time of 29.69 in the 50 meter backstroke, breaking the record of 29.87 set by Michelle Parkhurst of Dunn Loring on July 30, 2005.  Janet's record has been posted with the other NVSL records which can be accessed by clicking on the Records tab above. Congratulations Janet!     

On Monday, May 30^th, I received news no team rep would want to hear---Little Hunting Park pool is closed indefinitely due to a fire! In the early morning hours, a fire broke out in the guard's office and spread to the men's bath house, destroying the roof and much of the building. On opening weekend, LHP was shut down for the first time in over 50 years. (from Beth Louison, LHP team rep)
